Dorraine Samuels’ funeral to be held Monday

The thanksgiving service for the life of late broadcast legend Dorraine Samuels, the beauty queen-turned-programme host who made radio her kingdom for almost four decades, will be held in Monday, April 15.

Samuels, a widow and mother of three, died on March 26 at age 59 after battling cancer.

The loss of the soothing timbre of her voice, chatty style and bubbly personality signals the end of an era when Samuels and Alan Magnus ruled as morning monarchs on the airwaves of RJR for decades.

The funeral, which starts at 10 a.m. at the University Chapel at The University of the West Indies, Mona. The Gleaner will also provide a live stream at .

 

Three arrested after gun, ammo find in Trelawny

A .45 pistol and several rounds of ammunition were seized in Albert Town, Trelawny, on Thursday night.

Reports are that about 10:30 p.m., a team from the Ulster Spring Police Station was on operation in the area and signalled the driver of a Toyota motor car to stop. The driver complied and three male passengers, along with the vehicle, were searched.

During the search, the weapon and five rounds of ammunition were seized.

The men were taken into custody. Their identities are being withheld pending further investigations.

 

Suspect in New Kgn shooting released

The suspect who was taken into custody in relation to the fatal shooting in New Kingston last Saturday has been released by the police.

The suspect was released on Thursday following a question-and-answer session with detectives in the presence of his attorney, Peter Champagnie.

Reports are that about 2:45 p.m. last Saturday, two armed men drove up to the parking lot on a motorcycle and opened fire, hitting two men who were sitting in a car.

One died on the spot and the other man hospitalised.

The brazen shooting incident forced persons in the vicinity to scamper for cover.

 

Skeletal remains found in Clarendon

Detectives assigned to the Clarendon Police are probing the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the skeletal remains believed to be that of a human in Free Town, Longville Park, Clarendon, yesterday.

Reports from the May Pen Police are that about 8:40 a.m., passers-by stumbled upon the remains an alerted them. On their arrival, it was seen in bushes and was clad in a black T-shirt, green plaid pants and a pair of black water boots. The scene was processed and the remains removed to the morgue for post mortem.

Investigators are asking anyone with information that can assist them to contact them at 876-986-2529, the 119 emergency number or the nearest police station.

 

JDF to conduct live firing at Green Bay range

The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) will be conducting live firing at the Green Bay Range in St Catherine on Monday.

The JDF is advising residents that there is no need to be alarmed by the presence of the soldiers during this exercise; however, every effort must be made to secure livestock during this period.

Residents are also asked not to interfere with and/or move caution signs or flags.

The army says that in the event that unexploded ordnances or paraphernalia are found, persons should report it to the JDF Headquarters at (876) 960–8776.

Members of the public who may have concerns about the presence of soldiers in their area may also contact the JDF.
